When people talk about their language skills, we notice that they all too often focus on their level of proficiency. However, at Squidll we believe that your language level is not the most important.
Instead, measure your impact and the results of what you achieve with your language skills!
Focus on the impact you make
Of course it's nice to have an indication of your language level. The best way to do so is by using the CEFR scale, in which six language levels have been established internationally: from A1 (beginner) to C2 (full proficiency).
But what does that level say about your performance?
Isn't it more important that you can achieve your professional goals using your language skills regardless of your level? And if you want to improve your language skills, shouldn't you focus on what you really need?
Achieve your goals
Each position and each job requires skills at a different level. So it's important that you determine what you want to achieve in each language you speak.
- Can you lead a meeting in French perfectly, but unable to communicate with your clients in an informal setting? Then you can start working on that!
- Do you want to win a contract with a French customer?
- Will you be giving a presentation in English soon or do you need to take the lead in a meeting?
- Do you have to pitch a proposal in German to a new customer?
- Have you been invited for lunch by a client in an informal setting?
- Are you facing a tough negotiation in French where you want to be able to communicate the right nuances?
