- It’s is the shortened version of it is.
- Its indicates a possession.

Correct: It’s (it is) my birthday today. - Incorrect: *The dog is white, but it's tail is black.
Correct: The dog is white, but its tail is black.
- Incorrect: *Its my birthday today.
